Trying to reduce the total amount of data traffic, i.e. bandwidth, roughly correlating to power. But (1) Needs to take into account the initial address request(s) as well as the data transferred. (2) Latency is an extra consideration: if I have to send an address, wait to get the data, and then do the operation at the processor, I have had two of what we used to call "bus crossings". (What should we call them now, network traversals? Fabric crossings? There must be a pun there...) More if the data then has to be sent to the next guy who wants to operate on the memory location. Whereas is a send even a fairly large packet to wherever the data currently lives to do it remotely, I only have one bus crossing. (Plus return traffic, certainly for fetch-and-op that returns the old value, as well as error reporting to the requester.)
