As far as I can remember, it's been installed plug-ins, fonts and
canvas, also some uses bugs in browsers which may allow them to access
either cookies or visited pages.

Today's browser fingerprinting is much used to figure out a persons
interests and then server matching advertisements, as if you are
interested in cars it's more likely you would buy some car accessory
than lipstick.
The more they know about you, the better they can market products to
you. Google has the great advantage of reading your gmail and using
their super cookie to track you online too... of course google needs
money to stay in business, so not strange they try to be the best
advertisement provider.
