#25384 — New Slackware version

FromEef Hartman <E.J.M.Hartman@gmail.com>
Date2015-08-22 11:41 +0000
SubjectNew Slackware version
Message-ID<55d85fea$0$23740$e4fe514c@news.xs4all.nl>
It seems, from the latest set of updates to -current, that a new
release is getting nearer:
> Fri Aug 21 21:17:48 UTC 2015
> a/aaa_elflibs-14.2-i586-1.txz: Upgraded.
> a/dosfstools-3.0.28-i586-1.txz: Upgraded.
> a/etc-14.2-i586-2.txz: Rebuilt.
        ^^^^
and that the version will be 14.2 (see the version of aaa_elflibs
too).
So maybe someone should start a new "fun and games" competition for
the release date (and no, I'm NOT volunteering for that).

Dammit! I was betting on 15.0! :)

Considering 14.1 came out in early November of 2013, yes, a major release
seems to be overdue. On the other hand, maybe things have slowed down
upstream enough that the time between major releases will increase.

Of course, if he's not careful, we'll end up with having to make a jump at
some point, when the other distributions have much bigger release numbers,
making Slackware look like it's not been updated in a long time.

I think Pat does, kinda. That was his justification to jump from like 4
to 7 or whatever it was way back then... Ah! (Wiki)

In 1999, Slackware's release number jumped from 4 to 7. Patrick
Volkerding explained this as a marketing effort to show that Slackware
was as up-to-date as other Linux distributions, many of which had
release numbers of 6 at the time, and Volkerding expected them to reach
version 7 by the time of the jump.

WHich is why I brought it up. Since it did happen, I suspect it can

Yes, I know about that back then, but this aint 1999, its 2015, what
applied then, doesnt now and with fukbuntu and fedora its just getting
worse, however slackware is not in the same category as them, its more
inline with RHEL, SEL, and debian -all of whom have versions way lower
than ours. Even opensuse's version is lower and they dont show any signs
of suffering - though have always tended to be more widely used in Europe
than elsewhere.

Actually, it is not, current version of openSUSE LEAP is 42.1,
now THEY made the big leap (the 2.1 is for SLE 12 SP 1 compatibility,
the 4 is just for fun).
But LEAP 42.1 _is_ the successor to openSUSE 13.2 (and was released
just about a year later).

And now we _really_ seem to be close to the next release, Pat just
released the new version of "a/aaa_base-14.2", so with a 14.2 version
number, with as comment:

so I'm now expecting Slackware 14.2 within a few weeks.

Probably at Valentines day: that being 14-2, and adding up 14 and 2
gives: 16 which is F in hexadecimal, and... and... well.. that's just it
I think. I could go on with declaring our lurv for Slackware and such
but that would be too tacky, wouldn't it?

Ahhh..... No.

0xF is 15 in decimal, not 16

As always: "it will be ready when it's ready."

I'd be surprised if PV sticks with 14.2, though - far too many updates
for a minor version bump.

My money is still on 15.0 although I have outside money on 42.0 to match
Open Suse :)

As he already has issued too many packages in -current with a 14.2
version, my money is still on 14.2

openSUSE is already at 42.1 (as to reflect that they using SLE 12 SP1
packages too), so to beat that you would have to go to 42.2 <grin>

And yes, I've got both the SLE-12-SP1-Desktop as well as the openSUSE
Leap-42.1 iso's here:
4601151488 2015-11-26 18:25 SLE-12-SP1-Desktop-DVD-x86_64-GM-DVD1.iso
6712121344 2015-11-26 18:25 SLE-12-SP1-Desktop-DVD-x86_64-GM-DVD2.iso
4648337408 2015-10-30 00:33 openSUSE-Leap-42.1-DVD-x86_64.iso
(I've edited out a few fields as to make it not too wide).

Note that both SLE as well as openSUSE (and RHEL/CentOS 7 too) now only
come in a 64-bit version (and SLE CD2 is too large for single-layer
DVD's). Pat at least is still supporting 32-bit hardware.

I'm still registered as an official SLE (Desktop, the university
doesn't use the server version) support person, so can get (but NOT
redistribute) those SLE images.

Yes. I think he's catching up, and the next release will be "major" and
carry "15.0".

I thought a "major" Slackware release depended on some specific major
parts hitting a major release.
