Do you remember DOS?  And command like

       copy file A:

       rename A:file1 A:file2

etc?

Well mtools are a set of command line tools
to look and feel just like those old DOS commands
you used to love using, except they are named with
an m in front eg

    mcopy
    mlabel
    mren  (as in rename)
    mtype

etc

mtools -- Supported commands:
mattrib, mbadblocks, mcat, mcd, mclasserase, mcopy, mdel, mdeltree
mdir, mdoctorfat, mdu, mformat, minfo, mlabel, mmd, mmount
mpartition, mrd, mread, mmove, mren, mshowfat, mshortname, mtoolstest
mtype, mwrite, mzip


Apparently, if you have mtools installed, you can use Konqueror and even
Dolphin to work with DOS filesystems via mtools
(provided that the filesystems they are not mounted)

Hmm. I tried "floppy:a/" on KDE's Dolphin's URL, but got: "Could not 
access floppy:a. Make sure the floppy in drive a: is a DOS-formatted 
floppy disk and that the permissions of the device file (e.g. /dev/fd0) 
are set correctly (e.g. rwxrwxrwx)."

$ ls -all /dev/fd0

So, I did a "chmod 777" on it and retried. Nope!

But wait. "mdir a:" worked! Then, I tried kfloppy and it was able to do 
a quick format on it with FAT! :O 

It looks like I cannot mount floppy drives to use mtools and stuff. 
Write worked too. Um, but I wanted to use KDE and other GUI file 
managers to access the stuff. :(

mtoolsFM doesn't exist too in Debian's official servers?

My mistake.  I was not aware of mtoolsFM.  You are right it is
not in the Jessie repo.

Thanks for checking. Oh well. I noticed I can finally use the 3.5" disk 
drive in VirtualBox v5.0.12's VM too with mtools working. I guess this 
would do. :O

I was trying to remember when I'd last actually handled one! Possibly
well over a decade ago. I used to keep a fingernail longer for flipping
the write-protect tab. I installed Debian 0.93R6 from floppy, lacking
network access back where I lived: I had a packing problem of which
packages to copy onto which disks for the trip. I certainly haven't had
a 3.5" drive at home or work for a very long time. I just retired some
decade-old desktop machines and none of them had floppy drives. Though,
these days a 250GB SSD isn't much larger than my thumb.

FYI. I also tried it in Gnome. Same results (no permission to write and 
it shows root can do that). I also noticed these in both KDE and Gnome 
when mounted:

$ ls -all /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0

/media/floppy0:

I even tried kfloppy on this unmounted drive. It won't let me even 
format with an internal error -- device not correctly defined. :/

Also, is it normal for the drive's light stay on even after unmounting 
before ejecting the disk? I don't remember it doing that before in both 
MS OSes (Windows and DOS). Maybe this old drive is broken? Ejecting the 
disk would make its light stop. In fact, I don't remember having to 
unmount and mount for 3.5" disks back in those days in MS OSes. Must be 
a Linux/UNIX thing?

Edit the fstab line and add the option "uid={your_numeric_uid}" or
"umask=0" to open the permissions up for everybody.  The mounter in
KDE or Gnome is using root privileges to get the mount done, so the
default is that everything ends up owned by root
