So, actually a pretty good way for compilers to index through tables since most compilers weren't so good at picking registers that should stay loaded. Speaking of compilers and architectures, as I said I did lots of work on S/34. It wasn't unusual for the COBOL compiler to generate 4K executables. Not sure how they managed that since I never saw generated code. -- Dan Espen

One of my favourites was a little routine that implemented half-word versions of LM and STM by setting up a loop using AI to increment the register and address fields in an LH or STH instruction. We used all sorts of instruction modification hacks to save memory; since addressing was 16 bits and (non-existent) registers 0 through 7 were assumed to hold the values 0, 4096, 8192, etc. [1] you could directly access all 32K in any instruction - so rather than finding a place to store your return address in nested subroutines, you could simply store your link register (e.g. R14) in the base/displacement field of a branch instruction at the end of your routine. The code generated by the RPG compiler stored indicators in single bytes, with values of 00 for off and F0 for on. I never actually tracked it down, but I'm sure that they did this so you could just copy it to the second byte of a branch instruction, making it either an unconditional branch or a no-op. [1] If the first bit of a base/displacement field was 1, it was assumed to be a normal field using registers 8 through 15. If the first bit was zero, the remainder of the field was taken as a 15-bit direct address. A dummy USING directive kept the assembler happy. -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | Microsoft is a dictatorship. \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | Apple is a cult. No need to copy it. The EX instruction would just OR it into the branch without modifying anything. I didn't know that was how RPG stored it's indicators, I just always assumed they used bits. Well, I may have known it at one time. Right now it sounds like fresh knowledge. By the way, the mainframe LE debuggers set their hooks the same way, they EX a branch and LE toggles the mask from 00 to F0 when debug is on. > [1] If the first bit of a base/displacement field was 1, it was assumed > to be a normal field using registers 8 through 15. I guess I missed something, Assember on a 20 sounds pretty cool. I wonder if that 1440 shop I was at could have migrated to a 20 with some disks that way. We only had and needed 12K on a 1440, a 32K 20 with a few more disks than the 2 we had would have been a big step up. What fun I could have had. -- Dan Espen

The maximum core on a /20 was only 16K but with careful programming you could cram a lot into it. It could only have two disk drives but of course with removabie disks you could store as much as you wanted offline. -- Regards, John Levine, johnl@taugh.com, Primary Perpetrator of "The Internet for Dummies", Please consider the environment before reading this e-mail. https://jl.ly

I sure did. :-) And when we finally did get disks, we only had two drives. We started out with a pair of 8411s, which were perfect clones of IBM 2311 drives. We soon upgraded to 8414s, which looked the same but were clones of 2314 spindles. To handle these drives, which were beyond the performance of any integrated I/O controller, Univac added a selector channel which used IBM-style CCW chains - so I got into some fun programming there too. For instance, I got my hands on a 9400 program that would clone a pack in 11 minutes. I converted it and optimized it to do the job in 8 minutes - not bad considering the stock Univac utility took an hour. "The amazing thing about a dancing bear is not how well it dances, but that it dances at all." By the same token, there was a COBOL compiler for the 9300. I played with it a bit, and it was pretty much useless. Even if you could get it to generate usable programs, there wasn't much you could do in 32K. Rumour has it that in order to bid the 9300 on government contracts, you had to have a COBOL compiler. Usability presumably wasn't mentioned. For the purposes for which they were intended, the 9300 - and, I'm sure, the 360/20 as well - were real workhorses. -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | Microsoft is a dictatorship. \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | Apple is a cult. IBM sold more 360/20 computers than any other of their models. Sure, but I would be surprised if many of them used PL/I. Looking at the manual, all numeric data was decimal, and a lot of the work was done interpretively by calling internal routines (see the appendix about assembler interfaces) so for anything but the tiniest programs, it'd have been extremely slow, which doesn't impress me as a good use of a /20 configured with 16K and a disk. I believe that most /20 users programmed in a combination of RPG and assembler, and only had card and printer I/O, no disk. -- Regards, John Levine, johnl@taugh.com, Primary Perpetrator of "The Internet for Dummies", Please consider the environment before reading this e-mail. https://jl.ly

With over 7,000 model 20s sold, the expectation would be that a significant number would have used PL/I. Again, you have not produced a single fact about the model 20 PL/I, and those few "facts" you produced are wrong.

[ etc etc etc ] You really should look at the manual, particularly the sample code starting around page 200. The PL/I compiler was pretty impressive in a dancing pig sort of way, but I would not want to try array indexing where the index was stored in decimal and the machine had no CVB or CVD instruction. One thing that might have made it reasonable to write PL/I programs is that it did support the faux ISAM that the 20's DPS provided on its fixed block disks. I presume that DPS RPG could handle them too, but RPG only handled ISAM files in a few stylized ways. -- Regards, John Levine, johnl@taugh.com, Primary Perpetrator of "The Internet for Dummies", Please consider the environment before reading this e-mail. https://jl.ly

Maybe they wrote > the compiler so one large customer could check a box on an RFP or the > like. A lot of /20s were sold as fancy accounting machines that just > had card devices and a printer. Disks were expensive. The only data I have is that while IBM wrote a PL/I compiler for the 360/20, Univac wrote a FORTRAN compiler for their 9300. IBM did _not_ have a FORTRAN compiler that ran on the 9300. In the absence of data, I would still think that at least some people paying what was still a lot of money for a 360/20 would have liked to use it for tasks other than those one could do with RPG, without programming them in assembler. Either a PL/I compiler or a FORTRAN compiler would allow that to happen (although perhaps a COBOL compiler would have been more popular). And IBM was pushing PL/I as the replacement for both FORTRAN and COBOL at one point. So I can see IBM deciding that a PL/I compiler for the 360/20 was a way to cover all the bases by writing just one compiler. This meant they had to have it to claim the computer was really useful; they did not actually have to sell any copies, though. John Savard

Just as they did not have to sell any software for, say, the S360/50.

Assuming you mean the manual with document number A26-5687, on page 11 and 12, it describes PACK, UNPK, MVO, ZAP, AP, SP, CP, MP, and DP. Since CVB and CVD take a 32 bit operand from a register, and the /20 only had 16 bit registers, I'd think it would be obvious why they're not in the 20's instruction set. Perhaps this would be a good time to read the manual. >> One thing that might have made it reasonable to write PL/I programs >> >Don't talk rot. PL/I had decimal floating point simulated in software, very, very slowly. Are timings published anywhere? . > PL/I had decimal floating point simulated in software, very, very > slowly. . The model 20 did not have floating-point hardware. However, it did have the decimal instruction set. Inline code for floating-point could have been generated. . The speed of decimal floating-point was limited by the speed of packed decimal instructions generally. So it would not have been "very very slowly".
