The X Protocol was explicitly designed to work over a network. And as
it was designed in the days of 10mbps ethernet, network efficiency was
baked in[1]. That's why it has a lot of low level drawable primitives
(that are seldom used by many of todays newer X client programs). It
was much more efficient to send a command to draw a triangle at x1,y1
x2,y2 x3,y3 with fill pattern X and line size Q than to ship the bits
that make up the image over the wire.
In the beginning, it was always used over a network link. It is only a
recent occurrence (well, recent in the context of the age of X, 20 some
years is not 'recent' to many) where the server and client are both
running on the same CPU and the X protocol is actually being
transmitted over the local loopback interface.
X's network centered design is why the terms client and server are
reversed in X lingo from what has come to be known as 'client' and
'server'. In X, the 'server' is the component that displays bitmaps to
the user, and which has attached the screen, mouse, and keyboard. The
'clients' all run remotely elsewhere and simply communicate to the
server via the X protocol.

In that sense, you could rename all Linux system calls -- you've got the source code after all. There are architectural degrees of freedom, places that you are supposed to tweak, and places that have been cast in stone by the distro. For example, you are not supposed to use iptables and ifconfig to alter the firewall or interface parameters directly because other (systemd) components expect to be in full control of both. Marko

My router has a firewall. One of the things I do right after an install is disable iptables. Then selinux gets the axe. Systemd never complains. -- Dan Espen

Having looked at the documentation for it, it's pretty much a direct copy of Solaris's SMF (Service Management Facility) which first appeared in Solaris 10, over 10 years ago, except the config files are a different format. People didn't like SMF when they first saw it because it was a change in something they previously understood, but they very quickly grew to realise how powerful it is and then made extensive use of the new features. It was an interesting system that one purpose was to allow plug-in cards (which contained compiled Forth byte code) to run on either the older 68040 or newer Sparc CPU architecture at the time, although by the time I was using it, the 68040 was more or less obsolete. Each card could insert itself into the device tree and be initialised by the OBP before unix started up then (IIRC) the device information was passed into unix but that wasn't my job at the time... Despite using it, hacking it, writing lots of code in it, I'm still not a big fan of Forth. I can see its advantages in some instances but I feel it needs a certian amount of latteral thinking to really get "into" it. It can produce very compact code though - so the Jupiter Ace which had only 1K of RAM (or was it 4K?) worked very well and the editor would de-compile the byte code, then re-compile it into the system. If you try to write Forth the same way as, say, c you end up in a mess. I played around with PostScript just once - I had (have) a calendar program that I hacked up. When IBM stopped distributing its nice calendars to customers I modified the program to produce a nearly exact facsimile. For several years I printed annual copies for everyone in the IT department. -- Pete

I think at the time he was using an Apple IIE, connected to his laser printer, which actually had a hard drive built in (for those repetitive print jobs). No wonder he wanted to learn Postscript, he had a massively better computer in the printer. Michael

I wrote a program that sent PostScript _indirectly_ to the printer. At a PPOE we had a COBOL program that wrote a list to tape, which we sent to a phototypesetting service. When the service closed down, we had to find another way to print a pretty listing. We had an old Apple Laserwriter lying around, so I studied PostScript, then replaced the output routine in the program to write PostScript to a disk file rather than the old format to tape.
