(He didn't know the answer.) Only our local, large but family-run hardware store has a clock in plain sight. Huh. Recently, someone gave me (what I took to be) an better than average quality Chinese knock-off of some prestige-marque watch, fully mechanical, in return for a favour. But its self-winder wasn't reliable and it was so much trouble to select the right winder-stem mode and reset it that I gave it back. My current employer has fitness incentives where they pay cash money for achieving certain objectives such as x number of steps per day, but to get the incentives you have to provide evidence that you actually achieved that objective, and what they accept is evidence from a "fitness band". Well, if I'm going to wear something on my wrist every day, it's going to be _some_ kind of timepiece, so I now have a "smart watch".

Used to be that any room open to the general public had a large and conspicuous clock on the wall, and for sure there would be one behind the clerk at Customer Service. We have become a lot more demanding in our preceision requirement for clocks. In the 1970s a public clock that was 1-2 minutes out was perfectly fine. Your railroad clocks were somewhat similar to the Western Union clocks that were used to keep numerous time-sensitive businesses on schedule. I ran into them when I was working as a TV broadcast engineer in the early 1960s. Their primary design was a mechanical clock with (IIRC; that *was* several years ago) a small pendulum escapement driven by a spring. Just before each hour WU sent out a signal over leased lines to all of its time customers; on receipt of the signal the clock snapped the minute and second hands to the top of the dial and used an internal ignition cell (remember them?) to wind the spring. The command pulse dropped at the hour and the second hand resumed its motion, now (for at least a while) showing the exact time. One of the task of the gofers at the time customer site would be to note on a newly-installed clock whether the signal caused the hands to jump, and to adjust the pendulum accordingly. I don't know when the WU clocks ceased being the "gold standard" for timekeeping. Ours was certainly still in use when I left the station in 1965. Joe

Evidently, the minute pulse is critical for scheduling routine and heartbeat functions in the signalling systems for the track. They keep the watches synced to it so it is self-evident if this signal ceases to appear. (This will lead to every clock stopping with the second handle pointing straight up). -- mrr

This might be deliberate - they probably don't want you to realize how much time you're spending wandering the aisles looking for things which they've arranged in a way designed to maximize the amount of time you spend trying to find them, which in turn maximizes the opportunities for you to make impulse purchases.
