Indeed. Occasionally, such procedures require additional avionics
to be added fleet-wide[*]. Expensive for airlines (as they avionics
must first need be certified). Not possible for the nationwide automobile
fleet, unfortunately.

Motorists get nothing, and never will. Indeed, many changes to roads and cars are designed to pander to drivers' deteriorating skills. Can't keep the car in your lane? Here's a lane-drift warning alarm. Don't know how to parallel park? This car will do it for you. You can only solve so much by throwing hardware at it. A new car might let you walk away from an accident that would have once killed you, but that won't stop you from wrapping it around a telephone pole in the first place due to ignorance or testosterone poisoning. The sad fact is that the kind of safety measures that are standard in aviation will never be acceptable on the road. When I learned to drive, it was emphasized that driving was not a right but a privilege. It has now been reclassified as a necessity. The government can control one of the E's--engineering. So, roads and vehicles are constantly improved to be safer. Actually, a lot of road safety has been known for 75 years, it just has taken a long time to upgrade roads. For instance, median (or medial?) strips save lives, but lots of roads still don't have them, and have only the double yellow line. Anyway, enforcement of law so that drivers actually drive correctly as they were taught, is very tough. If a town gets tough on speeders on Main Street, the merchants will be quick to complain that it's costing them business, and so will the people caught in the speed traps. But even when I learned to drive, many kids just ignored the safety stuff and went wild in the car.

There is no alternative, because we don't have the ability to raise pedestrians and law-abiding motorists killed in car accidents from the dead, so we have no right to tolerate car accidents. Around here an increasing problem is roads that are overbuilt for the area. It's unreasonable to expect people to drive at 50 km/h on a road that's obviously built for 70. So, you are driving along, then bummph. Where I am in an urban area, there is one road in a heavily populated area that was clearly designed for fairly high speed. Few provisions were made for pedestrians or bicycles to get from one side of it to the other, that would have increased the cost. The designers worked for the state highway department, not the municipality, and "move as many cars as fast as possible" was clearly their design criterion. But if you then build houses up to the edge, multiply the number of cars by an order of magnitude, or fail to maintain it, it may no longer be safe. Or, our collective definition of "safe" may change, we may no longer be willing to accept whatever the design level of casualties was.

[snip] Very true. A key factor of safe driving speed is congestion. One can safely drive faster when there's little traffic as opposed to a lot of traffic on the same engineered road. Many highways today were built 50-60 years ago, and as a result of population growth, carry far more traffic than they were engineered to do. As a result, a road that perhaps was 70 mph when built years ago has to be 55 mph because of the traffic load on it.

Another is visibility, a road that is perfectly safe to drive at 60mph on a clear day can be dangerous at 30mph in fog or 45mph in rain, or even just on the short wiggly bit that really should have a different speed limit. There are man examples here of roads which are safe at just about any speed in stretches (straight, reasonably wide, no junctions, driveways or field entrances) and hazardous enough in places to make 50kph risky at times (bends or dips concealing field entrances, junctions or driveways). Also, traffic speeds have always been "conditions permitting", but most drivers don't slow down in bad weather.

And conditions can vary a lot. We had a spat of black ice here yesterday night. The kind where the road just looks like black asphalt, but there is a thin veneer of ice on it. I first noticed when the engine revved up and the traction control kicked in on a small hill. Wow. Slow down, espeially for the coming curves. Didn't stop the BMW behind me. He flashed lights and went past (didn't even blink, but that is the BMW for you) and nearly span out of control. Stopped near the ditch, but didn't quite go in. He was shaken, not stirred; so I went on my way. Slowly, but lost him in the rear view mirror. Suddenly an 80-rated road can have problems supporting 40. -- mrr

A couple of years back I stopped at an intersection. ABS kicked in at the end of the stop. I crept across the intersection and onto the long downhill, and the car started accelerating down the hill. With my foot on the brake, down hard, with the ABS A-ing and B-ing for all it was worth, gravity and lack of friction were in control. At the bottom there was a stop sign and a busy cross street. I finally managed to steer into somebody's yard, where the combination of grass and unplowed snow brought me to a stop.
