The shop where I worked at the time had a 1200-bps modem attached to the mainframe for remote maintenance. The closest I got to global networking in those days was watching a fellow student (who did some very questionable work on copy protection as a profitable sideline) using the EPSS[1] terminal to hop from system to system in various places using credentials gleaned from somewhere[2] until he gleefully reached a login screen claiming to be at the Pentagon and said he was stuck there (thankfully!).
