You apparently have failed to grasp that pure mathematics, much like pure
research, is engaged in for its own sake.

Anyone wishing to gain insight into the mindset of mathematicians should read
"A Mathematician's Apology" by G.H. Hardy.  (Note:  the most popular printing
includes a lengthy forward.  Skip it, at least at first.  Start right in with
Hardy's text.)
