They had to invent a lot. But they both had a big struggle with getting
the math right. Einstein sent out several requests for help when he was
embarking on general relativity sometime prior to 1910.
Maxwell did a lot for Einstein, because the same framwork could be
adapted for the start of his work on relativity, and then he was on to
the solution.
