#21117 — Why two copies?

Looking for something else in my windows 10 Programs and features, I
notice that I appear to have two copies of Betterbird (x64 en-US), both
are version 140.12.0. One of them is 566Mb and the other 288 Mb.
Reason?
Solution?

Reason: unknown to me. Solution: back up profile, delete both copies
in full (might want to use something like revo uninstaller to uninstall
in order to remove some remaining "crumbs"), reboot, load fresh clean
copy of 140.12.0 and restore profile from backup copy.

A wild guess:

Someone possibly installed a bogus Thunderbird
into your Windows, BUT that bogus Thunderbird's
installer did NOT update registry properly to
hide itself. :)

Or the last delta update to your Thunderbird
was faulty. OR it's actually the origin of
the bogus Thunderbird.

That's why I said delta updates are dangerous.

FYI
I decided to ignore backing up and uninstall Betterbird using Revo
Uninstaller, fully intending to add the accounts later.
It actually booted-up Betterbird's own uninstaller, but I did clean out
the crumbs. (It took out both instances.)
I then reinstalled B'bird and lo-and-behold the old profile was still
there and B'bird used it.
So I'm back where I was, but only one instance in the Programs list.

Revo uninstaller always first uses a program's own uninstaller.
However, after that's done, you have the option of doing deeper cleaning
out of remnants at several levels of depth. You didn't read how to
navigate and use the program to take advantage of it's cleaning
abilities beyond what the program's own uninstaller can do. Sometimes,
those residual remnants re-enable the same problems you were trying to
solve by doing an uninstall/re-install. Don't dismiss Revo as being
uselessware. Sometimes you don't need it but sometimes it is useful.
Just consider it another tool in your toolbox.

As Retirednoguilt says, Revo uses the software's own installer first -
if nothing else, I think it takes notice of where that uninstaller goes,
to note where to go when doing its own bit.

When you say "in the Programs list", do you mean what used to be called
"add/remove programs" or something like that, or just your Programs
option from the start menu? If the latter, you might have only had one
instance anyway, but somehow two shortcuts. I've had that sort of thing,
especially if I move my shortcuts around to tidy them, and then upgrade
something - it upgrades the one copy I have, but sometimes re-adds a
shortcut in the default position, leaving the one I'd moved.

Whatever.
It seems to be working OK now (not that it didn't work before, it just
had two entries that concerned me)
I now cannot get the Unified Folders to work - well it works, but the
folders are empty. However I can live without them as I was just running
a comparison with eMclient - for no real reason except it's too hot to
go outside.

FWIW - my Unified Folders are empty too, other than Sent and Deleted,
which contain the same as they do in the usual places.

+1

Only, I'd use Geek Uninstaller instead of Revo.

<https://geekuninstaller.com/geek.zip>

(No installer; it's portable.)

Thanks, looks interesting. I like that it offers MS Apps or whatever.

Would you use it over Revo just because you're familiar with it, or do
you think it's better in some way? (The single executable - thus
portable - has appeal.) I rather feel more in control with Revo (as I
remember it - haven't put it on here yet).

I'm not claiming Geek Uninstaller is better, but after using it for some
time I felt Revo was bloated. They have an Android app as well and AFAIK
it comes with ads, so...

Portable shouldn't be the issue since Revo offers portable as well:
<https://www.revouninstaller.com/nl/start-freeware-download-portable/>

There's another option:: UniGetUI.

<https://github.com/Devolutions/UniGetUI/releases>

I use it as an update checker (and installer), but it can also be used
to uninstall software (not all software shows up in the list though).
