#16809 — Absolutely am unable to get TB to display messages using the correct colors

From"John C." <r9jmg0@yahoo.com>

SubjectAbsolutely am unable to get TB to display messages using the correct colors
Message-ID<101k7ei$3a6gj$1@dont-email.me>
I'm using W10 Pro and TB version 138.0.2 (64-bit). I have tried
everything while attempting to get messages to display using the colors
other people intended for them to use. I also am unable to get my own
messages in the "Sent" folder (or any other folder) to display using the
colors I intended for them to use, both font and background.

I recently updated from an earlier version that didn't suffer from this
problem and skipped over a few intermediate versions when I did this. At
what point did this regression in functionality occur? The problem is a
complete deal killer for me and I want to go back to a version that
doesn't suffer from the issue.

TIA.

Pretty sure it was the implementation of the "Supernova" interface with
version 115 (when they skipped several version number names after
102.15.1) that fucked everything up.

I guess the version I'll need to go back to is 102.15.1.

I am thoroughly unable to understand why the developers forced this
feature degradation on everybody.

Maybe they really want to shut down the use of TB and pissing off the
end users this way is how they're going about doing it.

It could always be that they don't really use it as much as they should, or your idea of
proper display isn't something they look for.

I use a theme that makes the colors easy to read. Not sure I'd say 'the way I want them'
but then you never did explain your 'want', you just complained. A screenshot would have
told us a lot more.

Whenever I compose *or* whenever I view any email, it's mostly white
text on a black background.

Emails from people I know have their own color formatting and that's
lost. I'm unable to figure out a way to prevent that from happening.
Maybe I'm missing something, I don't know.

Currently, the theme I'm using is "System them - auto". I've tried other
themes, but none of them allow me any customization of what colors are
used for either viewing or composition.

As I said in the OP, this is a complete deal killer for me. I'll have to
go back to version 102.15.1 if I can't find a workaround.

Were you using a theme before? Or maybe you had userChrome.css tweaks?

It's possible you've been switched from the "familiar" three-pane table
view to the "modern" cards view.

It is possible to get current thunderbird looking almost identical to
older versions with the right settings ...

AFAIK, it's impossible not to use a theme in TB, even if it's the
default one.

My only userChrome.css entry is:

/* Move Menu Bar above Unified Toolbar */
#toolbar-menubar { order: -1 !important; }

No, I'm using the Classic View layout.

I wasn't going to post a screenshot, because I know dark themes can be
an acquired taste, but since you mentioned that you do use a dark theme,
here's my Thunderbird v139

But John C.'s query (the way I read it) is for coloured text within an
email message?

I'm able to compose email with Bright Script (Miss Scarlet actually) and
send it to a throw-away address. It turns up as a lady in red.

I can reply to that with added new shamrock green script back to my
primary address... and the pretend leprechaun is displayed correctly by
TB... as is the original blush.

Do any *people* send coloured html email? businesses may well do, but
even if people send in html, I prefer to read it as plain text, in
colours that I set, not them ... horses for courses.

Weeell... given the queries thrown out in this group, anything appears
(or in this case not) to happen!

In that trial mentioned above, here's what TB 139.0.1 with Win 11 24H2
displays for me:

Under View > Message Body As
do you have original html, simple html, or plain text selected?

If you have a backup of your Thunderbird profile from before the upgrade
that would be safest, if not then take one now ... then reinstall
whatever version you were running before

and start it with the "--allow-downgrade" flag ... that works for many
people, but the larger the gap in old/new versions, the more chance
there is it won't go well ... hence the backup.

I've been running 139 and just updated to 139.0.1 this morning.

No change.

At some point, users have to balance off "churn"
versus "utility".

And that usually means your Daily Driver version is
radically different than the chopware sitting in your VM :-)

I spent a few minutes playing the "is it in here,
is it in there" game, but my VM was about to tip over,
so I had to take my picture and get outta there.
