Under View > Message Body As
do you have original html, simple html, or plain text selected?

If you have a backup of your Thunderbird profile from before the upgrade 
that would be safest, if not then take one now ... then reinstall 
whatever version you were running before

and start it with the "--allow-downgrade" flag ... that works for many 
people, but the larger the gap in old/new versions, the more chance 
there is it won't go well ... hence the backup.
