#21591 — Checking the subject line spelling (or perhpas) not

FromJeff Layman <Jeff@invalid.invalid>

SubjectChecking the subject line spelling (or perhpas) not
Message-ID<114ev58$1ibl7$1@dont-email.me>
The subject has been deliberately misspelt!

One of the minor annoyances with TB is that it doesn't check spelling in
the subject field, although it does a good job with the text in the body
of the message.

It also does a good job of picking up "attach" or "attachment" (but,
oddly enough, not "attachments"!) in the body, or something which might
be an attachment, such as "myfile.pdf". Here's the odd thing - if you
happen to put the word "attachment" or "myfile.pdf",in the subject line,
the warning "Found an attachment keyword" will pop up. So if it's
obviously scanning the subject field for a word relating to an
attachment, why can't it spell check the subject field?

I'm using Betterbird (version 140), and it spell-checks the subject as I
type.

I'm using Thunderbird 140.13.0est under windows 10-64*, and the perhpas,
as well as the one of my common mis-spellings I've added (but not the
correctly-spelt word), has a wiggly red underline, as it does in the
body of this text, as fo hsdejong and Betterbird. (Though, oddly, not
"fo" which I just mistyped for "do". That must be a word!)

I don't know whether it's Windows or Thunderbird that's doing that checking.

As you say, it picks up anything in the body that might indicate
attachments (but not that word if it has the s on it!). Including the
letter-pair cv, which usually tells me I've caught the V key when typing
a C or vice versa.

* I see it _is_ now offering me the upgrade to 153.0.1esr.

That's the reason! I just checked the box in "Settings" to do that and
it now underlines the incorrectly spelt word in the subject field. But
then it makes no sense that it doesn't spell check the subject field
before sending if that box isn't checked. I'll see if that's been
reported as a bug, and if not I will do it.

I'm on 143.0esr (est...?!).

No grammar checker in TB! :-)

Mind you, in many cases I get the second bracket wrong because I
absolutely *hate* TB (and other text-based apps) automatically adding
the close bracket immediately after I've keyed the open bracket. So when
I check I see "()this is what has appeared)" rather than "(this is what
has appeared)", and by the time I've removed the first ) I've probably
put another bracket in the wrong place...

I might report the "s" issue as a bug another time.

It's bug 939590 (<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=939590>)
reported for SeaMonkey. That was 12 years ago! It's also related to bug
368915 <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=368915> reported 19
years ago and closed 10 years ago.

If I've followed your logic correctly, I can't see that it's a bug that
it doesn't spell check the subject field before sending, if you've
turned off subject field checking?!? But I've probably misunderstood.

I don't think I've ever seen a ) character be supplied, by TB or any
other application, when I type a ( character; I just tried typing
"(ever" earlier in this sentence, and no ) popped up anywhere. Could be
quite a _useful_ option - do you have some background app. you've
forgotten about? If so, please share :-)

(Now on "153.0.1esr (64-bit)". I haven't noticed any difference other
than the system integration popup, though it may be the case that some
things that have irritated me in the past are now not happening. [When I
started this paragraph with a (, no ) popped up anywhere that I could
see - I'm about to type the needed one manually.])

As far as I understand there is no separate /subject/ /field/ spell
checking that can be turned on and off manually. Either the whole
document, including the subject field, is spell checked as you type, or
only the body text is spell checked when you click on "send" (when spell
checking as you type is turned off).

(See my reply to myself to see bugs previously notified)

Not as far as I know. Also, it only happens the first time I open
brackets in an email or post. Of course, it's not doing it now...

What's your secret?

I'm using Betterbird 140.10.1esr-bb22, and it doesn't spell-check the
subject line for me. Both mail.SpellCheckBeforeSend and
mail.spellcheck.inline are set to true.

I typed "Tihs is a garve mitseak" in the subject line, and not only
did it not complain as I typed, but when I clicked the Spelling
button, it said "No misspelled words".

I'd love to know how to make mine behave like yours, because I do
tend to forget to check spelling of the subject line.

Well, this is weird. I haven't changed any Betterbird settings (apart
from choice of font in the Composition section) or installed a new
version since writing the above, but now the subject line is spell-
checked as I type. (The subject line is not spell-checked when I
click the Spelling button or when I hit Ctrl-Enter to send the
message, though the body is.)

Thanks! I've added attachments, .odt, .ods.

That option was hard to figure out, eh?

I never noticed that option was there. I thought it was just something
the devs had "hardwired" into TB to help, and it has been very helpful
in the past when I've been in a hurry and forgotten to attach a file
before sending. There's plenty of room in that yellow line at the bottom
of the page to add a "modify attachment list" button.

Preparing this as a follow-up for me, picks up 'perhpas' and 'misspelt'
as suspicious.

That's with 'Enable spellcheck as you type' checked in composition settings.

Yes, but only as you type, not when clicking the spelling button, and
not when sending a message.
