Confused about update reporting on win11 Settings, Updates.

I got the new-to-me laptop in December with winver 23H1, and when I
looked a month or two later, it had 24H2 pending, and a list of several
times it tried and failed to install it. This was probably because I
installed Explorer Pather, whose notes say that 24H2 won't install while
it is installed**

but NOW, I still have winver + 23H2, but Update History says nothing
about attempts to install 24. It has lists of quality updates, driver
updates, definition updates, and a other updates, none of which is 24H2.
So why is there no longe any evidence of 24H2 and where did I see it in
the first place? Was it Update History, or just the primary update
page?

**and it suggests uninstalling, then reinstalling after 24H2 is
installed. EPatcher has not caused me any problems other that.

on my home machine I "forced" the 24H2 update, on my work machine I left
it as long as possible, eventually it started nagging me, I let it try
it failed a few times, I waited

similar to yours the update dissapeared off the list, I waited, I tried
forcing it, it failed ...

then one day I looked and it had done it all by itself and was getting
post-24H2 cumulative updates ...

moto just leave it to it ...

All very interesting. I'm good at dooing nothing.

I looked today, and I don't know what changed but there were two failed
attempts to install it today and yesterday. But no refenced to the
several attempts prior to yesterday. Failed for the same reason as
before I'm sure, the presence of Explorer Patcher, but this time I noted
the error code, 0xc19200208, which is a long standing error code for
incompaitbility etc. when trying to install updates.

The attempts were referred to only in the Update History and were called
Feature Updates, even though they are aiui major updates, only twice a
year (H1 and H2). Go figure.

I uninstalled Explorer Patcher, only to see if it was responsible for my
two row Taskbar, and indeed it went back to 1 row as soon as I
uninstalled it. And went back to 2 rows as soon as I reinstalled it.
(BTW, there is no dialog or anything when installing. You click on the
setup program and it must only take a few seconds to finish, but it
doesn't tell you it has. But the taskbar returned to 2 rows (and
probably more if I wanted more.)

I'm trying to track down why my Alt-tab display is not what I want. I'll
start another thread about that, but I paused windows updates during the
couple minutes

The 2YH1 and 2YH2 thingies are indeed called 'Feature Updates'. Always
have been. You surely had them on your 'old' Windows 10 system, didn't
you!?

Beginning with 22H2(Win10 and Win11) features updates are annual.
  i.e. only 2YH2

Note: Depending how one has installed the feature in the past(WU, Media,
online update/upgrade assistant) Windows Update history may show/list
only the last feature update(2YH1 or 2YH2) or show/list the prior
feature updates(2YH1 'and' 2YH2)

Thanks for the reminder. In his OP, micky talks about 23H1 and 23H2,
so his information is unreliable.

Anyway, on his 'old' Windows 10 system, he should have seen *some*
'Feature Update'(s), whatever it/they was/were called.

Thanks for that. My Windows 11 system got the 22H2, 23H2 and 24H2
Feature Updates, but 'Update history' indeed only shows 23H2 and 24H2.

You should have this switched on in Windows Update.
But it likely doesn't help if there is a blocker preventing entry.
Microsoft is constantly flipping those blockers, as they discover
this or that. Sometimes, a company actually repairs a blocker,
and then that blocker is switched off.

"Get the latest updates as soon as they're available"

Even if you flip that, it might pretend to pay attention to the
hours-of-use when picking a time to "show up". It's not like
30 seconds after flipping it, there is a guarantee of visual
success symptoms and forward progress.

Since the blocker system, does not have a GUI with a readout,
if there is any capability at all to check, it's pretty well
hidden. Some people have games installed, with a certain
anti-cheat software, and the Upgrade won't come in as long
as the anti-cheat (which needs repairs) is still there. But
there would be no message telling you all that.

Phew, what a relief. And I thought I would be stuck driving
Grand Theft Auto all week.

No, I'm no adventurer when it comes to updates. Remember the Tylenol
poisonings? I had a remedy for that. You buy your Tylenol in advance
and keep it for a few weeks before you use it. If there are no news
stories about poisoning, then you can use it. So too with windows
updates.

But apparently it's willing to try again to put in 24H2, even t hough it
no longer reports failures prior to yesterday.
