Hi All, A customer was looking for a picture gallery program to read his digital camera. Windows Explorer reads his camera just fine. I tried Gigikam, Darktable, and Shotwell. They would not read his camera properly. Shotwell did not even try. (Shotwell and cameras work like a dream in Linux.) Gigikam, Darktable found the camera but would not read it. Anyone have a recommendation for something that actually works? Many thanks, -T

And he did not have an SD reader. It's not necessary to have a built-in SD reader. If he has a USB port, buying a USB SD reader is very inexpensive. That's what I use. I don't have a built-in SD reader. And your being on-site isn't necessary. Use TeamViewer. >>> Windows Explorer reads his camera just fine. >>> >>> I tried Gigikam, Darktable, and Shotwell. I do not even know if it has an sd card. I created a work around for him that is really simple. He is happy. The purpose of the question was the next time this happens, I need a Gallery Program that actually will import from an MTP device. I use AnyDesk and Help Wire. Help Wire is in test phase and a lot of stuff is not implements, but what is, I really like. AnyDesk is good too, but has spotty Linux support. TeamViewer is really, really expensive, but does work well too.

This is not unusual for qemu-kvm though. Rats.

Hyper-V for example, only has it for "certain classes". It's kind of a behavioral passthru in that case. The Virtualbox USB passthru is at the packet level. It doesn't matter what the device type is, you set a packet filter for a certain device, and all the packets from that, go to the Guest OS. That's why you would select VirtualBox for a job requiring "passthru of everything USB". There were a few virtualization tools in the past, that had no attempt at passthru at all. Virtualbox also has some things that it is bad at. It's not a level playing field. But sometimes, there can be reasons for crafting a Guest as a one-off, just for that passthru thing. For example, I have prepared USB boot sticks, using a specific Guest and tool for the job. Paul

Do you mean automatically download pictures from the camera? If so this could be done with a simple DOS batch file. Read the Image Information, EXIF info and read and write the IPTC info? If so Irfanview can do this. Give us more infromation on what you want.

Some mobile devices, the user has to "Swipe and enable something", before DCIM is visible or some ugly protocol like MTP works. Maybe the camera is similarly endowed and is Android in disguise. My USB Mass storage camera still works, but it seems a fraction of a second slower to start. As a debug step, I would start with a device known to not have a local permission slider and see if that picks up OK or not. It could be that the particular camera is more security-conscious. There are some camera devices which are Wifi, and don't even need to be wired up. But then there is the potential of more setup steps. and you don't need a Wifi router, for a Wifi-enabled camera. Just a Wifi add-on to the client PC is enough, since Windows has a "mobile hot spot" that allows point-to-point Wifi from client PC to Wifi peripheral. You can also run TCP/IP networking over Bluetooth, but that is not practical in any sense of the word. At least that part of the stack works now. Paul

As *he* looks for such a program for *his* camera (singular), I suggest he or you does/do exactly that. Most if not all camera manufacturers have such programs for their cameras. I have them for my old Olympus cameras and for my current Nikon DSLR. Such programs are manufacturer specific and 'know' the camera, more than any general purpose program can. OTOH, if you are looking for a solution for multiple customers or/and multiple brands/models of cameras, a general purpose program is probably better. > Windows Explorer reads his camera just fine. > > I tried Gigikam, Darktable, and Shotwell. Chris mentioned the Windows Photos app. That has a camera button/icon. I tried it with my smartphone acting as a PTP camera, but that was a bit messy because it did not only get photos from the camera (DCIM\Camera), but also all kinds of other images, screenshots, etc.. Can't be bothered to try it with an actual camera.
