| Message-ID | <vnfaat$2rmjd$1@dont-email.me> |
This post is cross-posted to both alt.comp.os.windows-11 and alt.os.linux to increase my chances of getting an answer. Some of you may have read that my HP 6730b Dual-boot Win7/Linux Laptop has died/is dieing so I've resorted to this HP Win-11 Desktop that I am tring to get up and running. However, in updating the Win-11 OS and all the bits and pieces of this HP 24-cr0002a 24 All-in-One N100 8GB/256GB Desktop Computer, I've used up all my monthly Data allowance ..... which doesn't get renewed until about 20 Feb so, until then my download speed is limited to about 35kB/sec. However .... (as I was trying to drift off to sleep last night), I thought "What about if I use a PrePaid chip (like I use in my Mobilephone), could I connect via the chip in a USB dongle (after disabling my Wi-Fi)??" Back in the day (2000 - 2010'ish), I used to connect via a USB dongle so it must be possible .... But, then I thought .... If I can connect like this using a chip in a Dongle .... when I connect my Mobile Phone (via USB to9 recharge my phone) to my Computer can't I effectively use my mobile phone, using it's Data allocation, to do my Web Browsing?? Is this what 'they' call "Tethering"?? If so how, on this HP Win11 Computer, do I disable Wi-Fi and then enable USB Tethering?? TIA. -- Daniel70

Assuming you have run out of bandwidth to use at home, if
I was in a temporary lurch, I would head to the Public Library.
For example, our central branch has 30 or so PCs, and a good
Internet connection, and can be booked for one hour sessions.
The computer reboots between sessions, wiping out the previous
customer URLs and accessed information. The computer is "clean"
at the beginning of each session. If you need to do research,
that's how you do it on a budget.

What to Know
First, connect your Android or iPhone to your computer with a USB cable.
From the Settings app on your phone, turn on USB tethering (Android)
or Personal Hotspot (iPhone).
Note: Depending on your mobile carrier, you may be charged a fee for
creating a hotspot. Check with your carrier if you're not sure.
Open your phone's Settings app and go to
Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering (Android) or
Cellular > Personal Hotspot (iPhone).
Tap USB tethering to tether your Android, or
Personal Hotspot to set up your iPhone as a hotspot.
Your PC should now be able to access the internet through your phone's internet connection.

1. Open Device Manager
2. Go to Network Adapters
3. Right click "Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device" and select "Update" <=== I wanted this info, to show you
which device aids in the USB tether
on the Guest end.

*******
4. Choose "Browse my Computer for driver software"
5. Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
6. Uncheck "show compatible hardware"
7. In the manufacturer section, select Microsoft
8. Choose the "Remote NDIS Compatible Device" model and click Next
This suggests that the phone port, puts out a declaration that it
follows a particular USB class standard. It suggests that both
OSes (Windows and Linux) can identify the phone declaring itself
as a network device, and load a driver for it.
Note that phone data is expensive, every bit as expensive as the
satellite data you ran out of. Be careful with the pricing!
Extensions past a bandwidth limit, can be billed in "blocks" of bandwidth,
and are especially expensive if you are roaming and traveling
in a foreign country. The bill can be a couple thousand bucks,
even for the simplest things like allowing a phone to "use data"
while in the foreign country. Let alone actually tether to
your laptop for example.
Even if a SIM is on offer, I can't see how anyone is going to
offer "gobs of data for pennies". This is not a service like
making phone calls, where the call duration is short. If I were
to give a person a tether for free, they'd leaving it running
24 hours a day, and download movies until the phone caught fire :-)
Wifi can be disabled with Airplane Mode, which disables the radio(s) on the PC.
And on Windows, you can try this, and on the next reboot, it won't sniff
around the existing interfaces for a network connection. That is just
changing one of the services in services.msc to disabled.
sc.exe config netsetupsvc start=disabled
On Linux, this would be managed (at least partially) in Network Manager.
Usually on the Task Bar area somewhere, or in the upper-right corner.

I've saved it so I can re-read it at my leisure. Your comment about phone data being expensive is noted .... but, as I get a bit of data included in my PAYG plan, I might as well make use of it if I can. (Normally it just expires each time I renew the $35 per month phone contract. I'll see how I go!! Thank you. -- Daniel70

windows 11
Settings : Network and Internet : Ethernet
Metered Connection ON/OFF <===

There are some grim statistics in there, but like Canada,
there is plenty of wide open space, and getting that all
hooked up costs a fortune.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_in_Australia
This is a moderately good way to get the Internet, but
it still requires a tower close enough to you for the signal.
It's sorta like 4G or 5G, only for a fixed location, and
uses a different frequency than the cell phones use. And
because some of the microwave frequencies can be a bit higher ones,
it can be affected by weather (snow, or heavy rain). The Wiki
calls this "Motorola Canopy".

Ignore the Tethering thing. Is is possible, but needlessly complex for what you want to accomplish. Instead, create a 'mobile hotspot' on your smartphone. It's normally in the Settings part for connections (Wi-Fi, Bluetooths, Mobile (cellular), etc.. If you specify which brand/model and Android version you have, we probably can give more specific instructions. When setting up the mobile hotspot, you give it a name (like for your broadband) and password. Next, you can connect your Windows 11 'desktop' to that mobile hotspot, just like you would connect your laptop to a public hotspot, for example at Maccas. The result is that your Windows 11 'desktop' talks to your smartphone via Wi-Fi and your smartphone talks to the Internet using mobile data from its monthly (?) data bundle. FYI. I use that setup when we're traveling in Oz. (You're in Oz, aren't you?)

It just depends on whether your mobile phone makes it easy to enable USB tethering. If it does, enable it, disconnect the PC from Wi-Fi (or any other connection) and connect your phone by USB to your PC and that should be all you need to do. As Paul mentioned, USB thethering does not only require setting things up at the phone end, but also at the computer end, so the computer can use the phone as a modem. Not rocket-science, but probably unfamiliar territory for most who have never done it. OTOH, with a mobile/Wi-Fi hotspot, one only needs do configure the hotspot on the phone and the computer end is similar to how it's used for any Wi-Fi connection, i.e. like the existing home Wi-Fi connection. Also setting up the phone end is similar to setting up the Wi-Fi access point of the broadband modem/router, so both ends should be familiar for the user. Besides that, a mobile/Wi-Fi hotspot can be used for multiple devices. USB tethering can only accomodate one device. For example during our last trip with four people, we had a laptop, four phones and three tablets, which could all share my 'big' mobile data bundle.

It took me longer to unplug the enthernet cable than to set up USB tethering (fist time ever), the phone showed up as a USB ethernet device and "network manager" automated everything. Without the GUI network manager it would no doubt been considerable effort. -- Jasen. 🇺🇦 Слава Україні
