Now the 24H2 update has arrived to my Win11 PC as a normal update.
Started the install, and the download took maybe one hour to download.
Started the install when download had finished, and went away for an
hour or two. The monitor had then shut down, but according to a steady
light the PC was still running: Waited another 2 hours and came back
to the same situation:PC running, black screen, PC not reacting to
keyboard or mouse. So I forced a restart and the PC started
"regretting" the update, and at last came up unchanged, and still with
24H2 waiting to install.
This is a relatively new PC with 16 GB RAM running at 3,9 GHz, 6
cores. How long should you expect the install to take? I have never
before seen an update even close to this long to install.

Best regards

OK, I understand you probably meant "reverting", but Windows regretting
updates kind of makes sense :-)

Yes, exactly. And Windows in fact used a norwegian word that is best
translated to "regret" in english :-)

I have a 13th generation Intel CPU with 32GB of memory and a 1TB SSD.
I went from Win 11 23H2 (?) to 24H2. I started the upgrade when it was
offered, about 6-8 weeks ago. I have a 50-75mb/sec Internet
connection. Download was maybe 20 minutes. I sat and watched the
download and then the installation for problems. There were none. I
started the install after the download and that also went smoothly. No
issues or problems. Installation was maybe 20-30 minutes and done. Not
many reboots or restarts (not needed).

On a machine like that it should only take a few minutes. But
there are things to deal with, like selecting language. You can't
just leave it to run.

If it were me I'd do a disk image backup before doing anything
else. Then run the installer and deal with it. Don't expect it to
be effortless. Also, don't let Microsoft have its way with your machine.
Download the ISO, write it to a USB stick with Rufus, then disconnect
ethernet and boot to the USB stick. If you're updating from Win10,
download the ISO to a data partition, then mount it to run
the update while keeping files. (For some reason it refuses to do that
via USB stick.)

According to my notes, it took about one and a half hour from clicking
the 'Download & install' button till the 'Restart now' button became
active. It then said "Restart required (estimate: up to 30 min)", but it
took only 7 minutes till the login screen appeared.

My laptop also has 16GB and 6 cores, but is 'only' 2.3GHz. But I think
the speed of the disk is more relevant. My laptop has a SSD. What do you
have, HDD or SSD?

It's a NVME.
OK. I will try another install and follow it more closely. This is the
first time ever I have had trouble with an update.
I have 50 Mb/s download speed, but with windows updates it often looks
like the update server can't deliver full speed, and even takes breaks.
I have a weekly full backup running, with updates each day of the week,
so no big disaster if the install crashes.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, because the update was so slow, I looked at the network traffic
and the download speed was very low and in small 'bursts' which were far
apart, so the system was just waiting for the data to come in. That
said, the download part was 'only' 15 minutes of the total one and a
half hour.

Good practice. I made an (Macrium Reflect Free) image backup, just
before the update.

  You're very welcome!
