What then, am I accessing my Gmail > account as when I log into it via Firefox? What's the format then? That is actually a very interesting discussion. The browser relates to a webserver (as opposed to a mail client relating to a mail server by such as smtp and pop/imap). However, the relationship of the browser to the webserver engages the function of gmail's database for your mail, which is able to also function as/with a conventional mail server. It happens that gmail's functionality is very good compared to others. A brief snippet from the wp article on gmail (which you might find worth reading): // Gmail is noted by web developers for its pioneering use of Ajax.[15] Gmail runs on Google GFE/2.0 on Linux. // https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gmail -- Mike Easter

John Corliss wrote: > it's accessing the account itself as an IMAP. When you are using a client such as Tb and gmail's IMAP function, you see what look like gmail directories but are actually gmail labels, as gmail's database uses labels instead of directories. When you manipulate the data in gmail's apparent directories (actually labels) in/with an IMAP client like Tb, there is a 'synchrony' between what you are seeing in the Tb IMAP client and the gmail database. So, you could say that what you see in a Tb IMAP client structurally looks like what you see in the gmail webmail display. However, when you use Tb as a pop client, you don't have the same kind of synchrony with the gmail database as you do when you use Tb as an imap client. Tb downloads from the inbox and either leaves the item on the gmail server or not. That's it. IMAP client-server interaction is an imap client such as Tb and an imap server such as gmail's function - but Firefox is not an imap client. Firefox is an http client. It engages the data at gmail with the google custom software described earlier. -- Mike Easter

However, the account is an IMAP one because the email stays on their server until I download it by moving it to the archive folder(s) I mentioned. All of this doesn't mean much. That is not necessarily true. You are accessing the Gmail servers via https and the Gmail servers are directly querying the gmail databases. What information do you have that indicates the gmail mail servers are using IMAP when they access your email? It just would not make sense for that to be the case.
