That is actually a very interesting discussion.

The browser relates to a webserver (as opposed to a mail client relating 
to a mail server by such as smtp and pop/imap).

However, the relationship of the browser to the webserver engages the 
function of gmail's database for your mail, which is able to also 
function as/with a conventional mail server.

It happens that gmail's functionality is very good compared to others.

reading):
