Just for the hell of it, i decided to search for "best evidence of God."

I checked out the first few websites, one of which was Rational wiki and they all had the same stuff. How the fact that existence exists is evidence of God.
The whole thing about the eye being so complex. hat we have a conscience. That the universe is life friendly. This one threw me because on earth alone there are so many things that will kill without hesitation. Snakes, bees, volcanoes, earthquakes, tidal waves, all kinds of wild animals, other assorted insects, and I'm sure there are many, many more that I haven't thought of. Once you leave the relative comfort of earth, the rest of the universe does not seem that friendly. No air, no gravity, no heat, no food, no other known life. This to me does not say friendly to life. Jesus Christ is supposed to be evidence of God and I don't get that one either.

How does Jesus existence give evidence for God? None of the people who were supposed to have been his disciples bothered to write about him until decades after his death. You can not count the 4 gospels as evidence by four different sources. As to the life and death of Jesus, taking the existence of a splinter group in an obscure Middle Eastern tribe as fact has nothing provable to do with God.

They also cite the Bible as evidence for God and really, this is the poorest example of all. Theists want us to treat it as a history book but it can't be updated. Somehow the fact that it is the best selling book in the world is supposed to be evidence, by that reasoning the second best selling book in the world is evidence that capitalism is the only logical economic system and that the world would be lost if the producers went on strike, that's because the second best selling book in the world (and has been for some time)is ATLAS SHRUGGED. Go figure.

Atlas Shrugged set a new record for sales in 2009 and all 4 of her novels had a combined sales that year of over one million copies. More than 7 million copies of Atlas Shrugged have been sold since it was first published.

That means I need to edit and retract the statement about it being the second biggest selling book in history HP and the Prisoner of Askaban has sold 55 million copies and it's not even at the top of the list. Still that a book like Atlas Shrugged could still be selling with figures that wold most likely put it on the best seller list if they allowed it, after 59 years is kind of amazing. It's not like it's an easy read.

If you think about it, there really CANNOT BE evidence of God. The best
we could manage would be "evidence of a sentience that understands
physics far beyond our understanding". We do not know enough to tell the
difference between a god and a technologically advanced civilization.

I disagree. The law of identity says a thing is itself and that means it has a specific nature. If God exists he/she/it has one too and we should be able to know it.

The biggest problem I see is that all the rel evidence indicates that many of the things in the Bible, are patently false. If there can be evidence against a God, there surely can be evidence FOR the existence of God.

 The best

I think the best we an manage and still be truthful is that there is o evidence of any god.

You think you have the power to distinguish advanced technology from
magic? Yet you quote A.C.Clarke on the subject, below. Which is it?
What do you think the "specific nature" of a god would look like, such
that you could identify it?

A note on Atlas Shrugged. I could not find any evidence that the above statement re Atlas Shrugged sales. I was quoting Yaron Brook. Considering the book was first published 59 years ago and that it has sold at best seller type numbers for almost all of those years is still quite remarkable. Let's face it, it is not an easy read. I much prefer the Fountainhead and the short but powerful Anthem.

For some reason Atlas Shrugged seems to sell better during economic upheaval.

Funny thing is my mother had at least one of Rand's books on her shelves
but for some reason I never had any interest in reading it (or them).
There must have been some asshole vible coming off it, I guess.

The only one I actually liked was "Anthem". I think of it as being about a bunch of human bees learning to be individuals. I loathe "The Fountaihead".
And, the movie sucks, too.

I think it is quite easy to disbelieve in a proto=pixie if it cannot fly or has such power as a superman.

Note, not "evidence of _a_ god or gods", but specifically "of God". So
any evidence of, oh, a presumably legitimate miracle happening would
support the conclusion "God"... because no other explanations, or even
other entities, are allowed in the race.

Yeah, good start there. Not like painting the target around the arrow,
or anything.

No, existence is evidence of existence. To be evidence of gods, there
would have to also be reason to conclude gods a) at least possibly exist,
b) have some means of influencing existence in some manner, and c) that
this influence is discernible. None of these have been established.

> The whole thing about the eye being so complex.

An eye is not complex at all. The simplest eyes are literally a patch of
a few cells which respond to changes in light. As much be amazed by the
faculty of touch, or ability to sense heat.

Once the simplest eye is developed, any improvement, however slight, is a
path to a modern eye.

> That the universe is life friendly.

Well over 50% of the surface of the planet is reasonably inhospitable;
the rest of the universe, by and large, makes these places look like
luxury resorts. Or, in other words, the notion the universe is "life-
friendly" is either completely ignorant of reality, batshit insane, or
both.

I think we can stop there; once the discussion has become about such
outlandishly bizarre, contra-reality notions, there's no point
continuing. If the rest of the post had something actually sensible to
say, please feel free to repost that part.
