Goal of new NASA office: Protect Earth from asteroids
http://www.cnet.com/news/goal-of-new-nasa-office-protect-earth-from-asteroids/

NASA is getting into the 'protection racket'.

NASA is going to knock
on your door
and sell you
protection insurance.

You'll say, "Protection from what??"

They'll say,

"We are selling you insurance
to protect you from Asteroids
from killing you!"

Or, as Al Capone would say..

"You're buying protection from US!!!"

The Starmaker

NASA are just a bunch of fuckin...gangsters.

I think they come up with a 'new' racket everyday to take your money.

How do you like this new title NASA conjured up?

Planetary Defense Officer.

It's clear from the geological record that the Earth has been hit by
large objects in the past, and that the results can be devastating -
wiped out the dinosaurs, and a good many other life forms, for example.

Lesser impacts have caused widespread, if not actually global, damage. A
meteor could easily take out an entire city, killing millions of people.

So it's not unreasonable to seek to prevent such disasters if possible.

Sylvia.

I'm pretty sure, "Sylvia" that a nice stiff energy tax on the order of
maybe a trillion dollars a year would probably be pretty good protection
from any such disaster. I think the scientific consensus agrees with me.

Given the relative expected death and infrastructure damage from
terrorism v asteroid strikes it works out a reasonable US budget for
asteroid avoidance is around $160 mn per year.

It could do worse than that.
Take a look at 51° 19.744' N 68° 41.193' W in Google Earth. That
feature, roughly 60 miles in diameter, is a 200 million year old meteor
crater.

Imagine if that hit, say, Hartford. Hartford goes, and Springfield, and
New Haven, and while they aren't actually going to be inside the crater,
New York and Boston are both going to pretty much cease to exist, and
most of the east coast is going to be in much the same condition as it
might be after a nuclear attack, minus the radiation.

And it gets worse--there's reason to believe that it was a multiple
impact with addtional strikes in France, Ukraine, North Dakota, and
Manitoba.

Wikipedia says it's the SIXTH largest such crater, though it's the
largest easily visible one. When I entered the co-ordinates into
google maps, I had to back out three times before the structure became
visible.

The Manicouagan wiki page says "It was once thought to be associated
with the end-Carnian extinction event."

but the Carnian page says "Its boundaries are not characterized by
major extinctions or biotic turnovers, "

So was there or was there not an extinction event at the end of the
Carnian, before we can assign it to the Manicouagan and friends
impacts.

i already told you girls, what wiped out the dinosaurs was a lack of
girl dinosaurs.

There simply was not that many dinosaurs around in those days...just a
hand full.

How many whole dinosaur bones did they find on earth by today? not
enough to keep them around long...probably under 20.

20 sets of dinosaur bones here in southeast Texas alone. Thousands of sets of dinosaurs bones across The Great State of Texas.

Dude, you really need to up your game.

I'm talking about a whole complete set of a dinosaur. Not...a toe, or
speculative parts.

head to toe.

I'm talking about a big dinosaur, not a little two inch lizzard.

Just give me one name.

Solly collects dicks. A dinosaur dick is a great addition to his
collection. Actually, people send him bags of dicks all the time. That way
he can be tested to see if he is smarter than a bag of dicks. So far, no.
