It's clear from the geological record that the Earth has been hit by 
large objects in the past, and that the results can be devastating - 
wiped out the dinosaurs, and a good many other life forms, for example.

Lesser impacts have caused widespread, if not actually global, damage. A 
meteor could easily take out an entire city, killing millions of people.

So it's not unreasonable to seek to prevent such disasters if possible.
