I'm slowly getting used to the Win8.1 desktop. 8.0 sucks bigtime. M$ 
should offer a free upgrade to 8.1 for anyone they sucked into taking on 
Win8.0.

That's why it's popular. Users from the M$ world are not forced to jump 
through hoops trying to figure out the differences. That's why Win8.1 is 
a step back towards Win7..  ;-)  Push them users too far and they revolt!

Yeah, had the same issue with a Debian testing system (not Mint).

Mint will always be behind the 8 ball because off those facts you note 
below. That said, bleeding edge isn't always a comfortable place to be. 
BTDT and these days I stick well back in the pack. That said, my needs 
are much less extreme these days since I'm no longer involved in 
Curriculum development and educational technology.
