Well, about thunderstorms I have an alternative explanation:

The thunder is in that scenario actually the reason for the flash and 
not the other way round.

The thunder is a sound wave, which compresses the air and enables 
ionisation of the air in its center by acceleration of the molecules.

Then the high tension of the upper atmosphere discharges through this 
channel to the ground.

This explanation fits very well to the observed lightnings, but has no 
explanation for the thunder.

Sorry for that, but possibly we have overlooked something, that could 
eventually cause thunder without lightning.
