I can't speak for Bud, but I will use editors with less back-and-forth
traffic sometimes when connected to a remote system. Internet lag feels
worse if there's more overhead.

ed is extremely good at low overhead. True vi in "open mode" (not
supported by Vim) is pretty good. The rarely used "open mode" was
designed for hardcopy terminals. Just set TERM to something with the
'hc' flag in /etc/termcap and start vi. I believe nvi still attempts
to support "open mode".

Quoting vi_diff.txt from vim:
							  *:o* *:op* *:open*
:[range]o[pen] Works like |:visual|: end Ex mode.
				  {Vi: start editing in open mode}

:[range]o[pen] /pattern/ As above, additionally move the cursor to the
column where "pattern" matches in the cursor
				  line.

Vim does not support open mode, since it's not really useful. For those
situations where ":open" would start open mode Vim will leave Ex mode, which
allows executing the same commands, but updates the whole screen instead of
  only one line.

I disagree with "not really useful" but not enough to push for vim
support of the open command. I know where to find, and how to use, ed
(and ex).

open mode could conceivably be useful on a braille terminal, too
