I've used Steam for years with zero malware/adware problems. So I
suspect you've been lied to. He probably installed something *else* with
bundled adware in it - perhaps from CNET Downloads, VersionTracker,
MacUpdate, or another download site that inserts adware into downloads.

Easy fix: Don't download software from untrusted sources.
