The difference between encyclopedias in the old days, and Wikipedia,
is that in the old days the writers were expected to have at least a
modicum of expertise on the subject that they were writing about. Now
any idiot can edit a Wikipedia page, and most do. Wikipedia is
promoting a troll culture in which everybody gets to be an instant
expert on every subject, so long as they can get their fellow trolls
who are equally ignorant to back them up. It reminds me of the "Last
Man" that we were warned about in "Thus Spoke Zarathustra," who makes
small of everything and believes in nothing, except the wisdom of the
crowd. We have gone downhill since the 1970s, and I predict that this
trend will continue.

It has been said that if you put a million monkeys to work tapping on
a million keyboards, they would eventually produce something
meaningful. Now, thanks to the internet, we know that this isn't true.

LAMP etc. is a tool. Lanier was talking about applications.
