I have never seen on, but ffrom what I rmember they were little more
than a machine with a built in language processor for Lisp.  Kind of
like saying the early microcomputers (TRS-80, Commodore64, etc.) were
hardware designed to run BASIC. 

Interesting read about Lisp Machines in wiki.
