Originally, retaining compatibility with the Honeywell machines,
the doing of which was part of their original business plan.

The Honeywell machines were that way, iirc, because they were being
compatible with some form of teletype.

Of course once you saddle yourself with a compatibility albatross,
your customers make it hard to dump.
