I just rigged up the connection and the device did power up.

The two last photos.

It worked and responded; I let it connect to the WiFi. I let it sync, it
said it wanted to update itself, and I accepted. But then it stopped
responding to the touch. It responded to the "home" physical button.

The battery icon went down to nearly discharged, so I connected the USB
cable.

No response to the touch. At some point I heard a "clack!", which I
thought would be one of the 3 AAA rechargeable batteries shifting
position inside the holder, but later realized it was something
electrical. No smells.

I rebooted the thing, it came back again, update done, but still not
responding to the touch. Thus I can do nothing with it (I want to
rescind the adobe login).

I will try recharging the batteries externally, but it seems I will not
be able to progress.
