According to some stories (I don't know whether this is 100%
accurate), the Pythagoreans were horrified to discover that the
length of the diagonal of a square cannot be expressed as the ratio
of two integers. In modern terms, sqrt(2) is irrational. This fact
attacked their concept of mathematical reality. They might have
said that truth itself is fundamentally broken.
But there was a rigorous proof of this disturbing fact, and they
could not refute it. (Supposedly one person was murdered for
divulging it.)
They were deeply offended by the irrationality of sqrt(2).
(Note that "irrational" here merely means that it's not a ratio,
not that it's in any way insane.) And today mathmaticians simply
accept that not all numbers are rational.

The idea that there are statements that are true within a system
but cannot be proven (or disproven) within that system is perhaps
equally disturbing. But again, there is a rigorous proof,
and mathematicians have no choice but to accept it. Gödel was
right, and the world has not collapsed. Mathematical truth is not
controlled by our prejudices.
You might as well dedicate your life to proving that sqrt(2) is
rational.
