OK, let's go over this C program.
What you've written above is of course not a complete program.
Your functions AllocateHeap, SaveState, and RestoreState are
not declared, and as of C99 calling an undeclared function is a
constraint violation. The type name uint32_t is not visible unless
you have a #include directive for <stdint.h> (or <inttypes.h>).
(And the fact that you're using uint32_t, which was introduced in
C99, implies that you're not using C90, which did allow calls to
undeclared functions.)
S1 = (uint32_t*) 16; // size param passed to AllocateHeap
This makes S1 point to a uint32_t object at address 16. That's
... odd. Converting a constant integer value to a pointer is
rarely meaningful, unless you're on some kind of embedded system
where you know the exact memory layout. I suppose if you intend to
run this code on your x86 simulator, you can guarantee that there
is addressable memory at address 16. Why 16? Is some known value
stored at that location by some other mechanism? But the following
lines make me think that's not what you intended.
AllocateHeap(&S1); // Allocates 16 uint32_t
I presume you have reasons not to use the standard malloc function.
If I understand the comment correctly, this is intended to allocate
16 uint32_t objects (i.e., 64 contiguous 8-bit bytes, aligned
for 4-byte elements). If the argument is intended to specify the
number of uint32_t elements to allocate, why on Earth would you
pass a uint32_t** argument rather than just a uint32_t (or an int,
or a size_t)?
Can you describe what's stored at address 16, and why AllocateHeap
doesn't take a simple integer argument? And why does it not return a
result? (Or if it does, you discard it.) Allocation functions
typically return a pointer to the allocated memory.
I'm fairly sure I've misunderstood your code because I can only
see what you've written, not what you think it's supposed to mean.
Given the above, I won't try to guess how SaveState and RestoreState
are supposed to work. They both take arguments of type uint32_t**,
but it's hard to imagine what they'd do with them.
Whatever you're doing, it's unlikely that the code you've shown is
the right way to do it. Frankly, it looks like it was written by
someone who doesn't yet understand what "*" and "&" mean, and who has
just been adding arbitrary symbols to make the code look plausible.
(I would have said it looks like you added arbitrary symbols until
it compiled, which is a particularly dangerous approach in C,
but it doesn't even compile.)
Or am I missing something?
