I tend to want the smaller device(s) when I am doing something like hiking or running, when I really don't want to have a bigger device jostling in my backpack. Now, in the places I hike (and live :-( ) cell phone connectivity is sporadic, so I might not need such a device to be a "phone" that is always connected. Perhaps it would be okay to synchronize when back on my PAN with my bigger devices. But I know that I don't want to have to plug it in to synch. (I don't even want to have to plug it in to charge up. I'd love it if energy scavenging could power the iPod shuffle I listen to podcasts on.)
