Exactly. Edit simply sends the text byte by byte to your printer, so 
in that case, it is entirely up to your printer what to do with it. It 
is conceivable that there are printers that can be switched into 
Unicode mode with the right commands.

Neither. The big task is to change all the text related code and data 
structures (and in a word processor, that means most of it) to cope 
with a different way of representing the text.

Just the slight difference between, say, burning a piece of wood 
(trivial) and changing an existing car design to burn wood instead of 
petrol (huge task).

Actually, in the case of EasiWriter things are not even that bad, 
because wide character versions of EasiWriter with full support for 
Japanese have been shipped to the Far East in set-top boxes, so a 
considerable portion of the work has already been done. Still, even 
the remainder would be a big effort.
