Ehm not true. Of course it was designed and used by Epson but also 
widely implemented by the competition e.g. my Star LC fully supports 
ESC/P. Nowadays it's emulated but still supported by some, mainly via 
ESC/P-2 which is backward compatible.

The Epson EPL 6200N might be a good choice for my needs. Found it 
online for as little as 200 EUR, works as network/USB 2.0/Centronics 
PostScript printer and even supports ESC/P (for the Amstrad NC I own). 
Bit early for Christmas though :(
