Serious hint to anyone thinking about a career in software: Make sure to 
develop a solid understanding of at least digital hardware. Build, 
experiment with micro controller eval boards (they are cheap), learn how 
to use a logic analyzer and an oscilloscope. That will hugely increase 
your job security or your self-employed income prospects.

I am still doing all my book-keeping on 30+ year old software, MS-Works. 
It still ... just works. Even on a Linux system (using WINE).
