Convenience, speed of operation, and ease of use; these cut down on my time and energy, and avoids me jerking around with problems that are caused by older technology (most frequently). Less time and brain-spin is the definition of "makes more money" for me. MBPro is vastly better in all these aspects than my previous box.

Meh. Like so many who came before you, you'll just have to adjust.

The likelihood is that you won't be upgrading computers as often
anyway, and by the time you do the old technology will be long gone.

Just get an adapter or dock / hub. Problem solved relatively cheaply.

If buying a new drive is cheaper than buying adaptors to make an old
drive work, it would be exceedingly foolish to buy the adaptor. If it's
anywehre near the price, it would be foolish.
Buy a single USB-C JBOD enclosure and shove all your drives into it.
<https://www.amazon.com/MiniPro-RAID-Type-C-USB-C-Enclosure/dp/B01GVVC59A/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1477714837&sr=8-3&keywords=JBOD+usb-c>
You can get USB-C to USB-A adaptors for $10-12.

And Firewire has been dead for half a decade.

If the MBP doesn't fit your needs, don't buy it.

Get used to it. It's been going on like this since forever. The
USB/FW/TB/etc thing should be blamed on Intel, as they're the ones
coming up with it all; Apple is just using it. I blame Intel for the
USB A/B port. They should have had something like USB C since the
beginning, but it's only been around since what, 2014? It took way too
long to get here.
Would I like my new machine to still have an ethernet port and
Magwhatever power ports? Yes. Would I like a built-in SD reader? Yes.
But I don't need a modem port. Or an old-style serial port, though I
*would* like an ADB port, as I like the original Apple Extended Keyboard.
SCSI's out, though it works fine in my SE. IDE is out, though it worked
fine in my Q630. Apple never used eSATA that I know of in MBP. Firewire
is ANCIENT at this point. While my machine has a FW800 port, I gave up
on it shortly after buying my 2009 MBP.
I just finished upgrading my external disk enclosures from the ones I
bought in the mid-to-late 2000s. I had to, as they wouldn't handle 4TB
drives properly.

When was the last time you bought something in a FW800 enclosure?

There still is at least one around. I have an ancient Wacom tablet with an ADB port and I connect to a modern Mac via an ADB-to-USB adapter. I don't remember if I ever had one. I have one of these in my cable box in the closet: <https://www.amazon.com/Griffin-2001-ADB-iMate-Universal-adapter/dp/B000067V8L> -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. No complaints‹when I started this thread I said "Whatever this may look like, it's an observation, not a complaint." It's just that I'm not going to buy any new Mac hardware until I have to. If past experience is a guide, that will be five or six years from now. I put it off not to punish Apple‹spite is not my style‹but to save myself the cost of replacing perfectly good MacBook Pros that still run Adobe CC and Final Cut Pro, and the cost of replacing a passel of perfectly good hard drives. Amazon currently lists 672 FireWire hard drives. Nice. As I said, I gave up on FW around 6 years ago. There was no reason to keep using it. Why have you? Aren't they still more expensive? > For an ancient technology (like displays and keyboardswhere's the > cybernetic port?) FireWire serves me well. I want spoken natural language recognition, and I want it NOW! But programming that way might be a bit silly. > No complaintswhen I started this thread I said "Whatever this may look > like, it's an observation, not a complaint." > > It's just that I'm not going to buy any new Mac hardware until I have > to. My system had gotten too slow (important), and it can't be upgraded to macOS Sierra (not necessarily as important).

I'm having a senior moment. Why doesn't Davoud just upgrade the enclosures on his external HDs to accommodate current hardware and quit worrying about it when the time comes? Macsales sells the enclosures cheap. If the hard drive doesn't support current enclosures, transfer it's data to one that does. I'm not a hardware guy, but swapping current HDs into new cases is pretty easy. I'm missing something again. leo

Why doesn't Davoud just upgrade the > enclosures on his external HDs to accommodate current hardware Possibly for the same reason he bought a FW enclosure this year, despite knowing for at least half a decade that FW was EOL and would not be maintained in the future. Thunderbolt 1 is faster than FW could ever be, Thunderbolt 2 is faster still, and Thunderbolt 3 is ludicrously fast (40Gb/s v FW800's 0.8GB/s). -- Hey, baby, I've got just the cure for that penis envy back at my apartment...
