Not a web or Usenet poll, but a scientific poll of professional users in the arts and sciences. What is more important to you in a MB Pro‹an ultra-thin form factor or greater versatility through more ports, including legacy ports? The Ethernet port has been gone for years, but it has become more important for Mac users in the sciences, as many instruments that were not available to Mac users have become available via Ethernet connections to devices with built-in web servers, eliminating the need for platform-specific drivers and proprietary software that was most often Windows-only. Solution: buy more adapters, though USB-C lacks the secure lock that Ethernet connectors employ. And don't collaborate; these connectors are prone to slip out if you rotate your MBP to show someone the display. FireWire: Apple told us that we were "Creative Pros" who needed small, rugged, external FW drives, and we bought them. Tons of them. Then they came for our FW ports, leaving us to buy more flimsy slip-fit adapters. We've got $ thousands invested in FW drives. They're still widely available in Mac shops. The price of Thunderbolt drives hasn't come down much, and there aren't that many of them. Already got Thunderbolt drives and damn the cost? Buy more cable adapters. MagSafe: A stroke of genius, they told us, and it was. Gone, and you'll give up one of your measly four "Thunderbolt 3/USB-C" ports for the power adapter. SD Card Reader: Remember, you're a "Creative Pro," working on location with still cameras and high-end video and audio, so you need a built-in card reader. Gone. USB-C: The wave of the future, until it isn't. How long before Apple tells us that something else is the wave of the future? It gives me a headache figuring out how many adapters and new cables I would need for DSLR tethering, my card reader, my USB 2 type B printers, my USB 2 type B micro, USB 3 type B micro and so on. Optical and analog audio input? Gone. My cost? $3949 for a fully loaded, top-of-the-line 15" MB Pro (organizational discount; full price $4299). About $350 for new cables and adapters. $1500 for two 2Tb external backup SSD's (adapters for "Thunderbolt 3/USB-C extra). Cost to "upgrade" to a new MBP Pro equivalent to my current 15": $5800, or $6150 for those without a discount path. Tax additional: total $6090 or $6458. Whatever this may look like, it's an observation, not a complaint. My answer to the scientific poll, guaranteed to be worth what it costs you to read it, is "non-anorexic laptop with legacy ports." Two USB, four USB-C, two FW 800, Ethernet, and MagSafe power connector, for starters. And kill the "touch bar" now instead of waiting a couple of years before killing it in favor of some other New Age fad gimcrack. Lucky me! I have two 17" MB Pro's with SSD's (Apple said that a "Creative Pro" needs a 17" portable for video editing until they said it was all a mistake and s/he didn't need a 17" after all) and a late-model 15" Retina SSD. So it'll be years before I need a new MBP and I'll not only get to skip a generation or two of adapter cables, but I'll also get a different New-Age keyboard gimcrack. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm
