You're saying your SE *also* won't resume when you press the button?
That's not my experience with my SE and a pair of Etyomtic Research ER7
earbuds, nor with the Apple-supplied ones.

There must be something different about your setup. 

What sort of headphones are you using? 

Have you tried going to the Apple retail store with your headphones and
trying it on their floor models? I'd be interested to know what you find
there.
