Linux on the desktop still languishes, either way.

There's little money to be made down there. Apple doesn't want to
compete in the low end of the market for a reason.

Yep, and it's that user experience really matters on the desktop.

Apple's doing just fine, and Apple's desktop products are a viable
choice for *many* more people than desktop Linux.
