I posted some time ago (when Mavericks came out?) that I had turned off 
memory compression and a couple here went apeshit about me making my 
system unstable.  Utter tripe of course - if you read the source code 
headers it is clear as spring water that the mode is absolutely 
optional.  And certainly not needed in a computer with 24 GB of RAM that 
is rarely loaded to over half that...  For other reasons I've re-enabled 
Mem compression but I've already set it to be off next time I reboot 
which is seldom.  I've also disabled VM in the past though it is 
currently enabled.

Indeed, I might upgrade this computer to 32 GB and turn off VM as well 
as MC after I update to El Cap.  Point is while memory space has grown 
(and cheaply) the OS has remained relatively compact.

Spotlight is enabled on my systems as I find it saves me oodles of time 
to locate files, e-mails or other info very quickly (esp. when I have 
only a vague memory of what the file was names or where I so efficiently 
stored it ...).  IAC Spotlight seems to be efficient at gathering and 
indexing data in the BG.

I don't recall seeing the dot in the middle of the Spotlight icon in a 
very long time - perhaps since ML? (indicated that a refreshed index was 
being built).  OTOH, they may have gotten rid of the dot indicator 
and/or the rebuild function.  I don't recall - too lazy to look it up!
