It's the newer, more overbloated applications that make it seem to be
slower (although more RAM can sometimes help with that to some degree).

I've been using FileMaker Pro 5.5 for years and it loads and runs
fairly fast on this ancient PowerMac. I recently installed the
still-old FileMaker Pro 7 and it takes far longer to load and is a lot
slower in use ... to the point that I'll probably rarely bother using
it.

The same with Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, Microsoft Office,
Firefox, etc. The newer versions load and run a lot slower, but the
computer itself is exactly the same.
