Sounds like they resurrected a feature from the MIT Lisp Machines of the 1980's. If you couldn't find the mouse cursor, you moved it around really fast, and it would turn into a huge cross-hair. -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***

There was something like this in Windows or at least an add on to
Logitech drivers I've had in the past. Don't recall the activation but
it may have been (if the mode was selected) that you'd just move the
mouse and it would briefly be large before getting small again.
Could also be that it was on a laptop where the LCD display made seeing
a white mouse difficult (earlier days of colour LCD displays).
This sort of thing is not a great leap in UI. But I guess someone
realized that when people can't see the cursor, moving ("shaking") it is
the surest way since the eye is drawn to movement. So make it big
briefly when shaken. Just don't stir.

Window Server uses lots of CPU, up to a whole CPU. I described it to the guy at the Genius bar as a dog and he agreed. I never had speed problems with earlier versions of OS X. -- John Varela

The reason I was at the Genius Bar was that the original hard drive had died and had to be replaced. I had installed Yosemite on the original drive, and then backleveled to Mavericks because Yosemite was so slow. At the Genius Bar I had them install Yosemite. Same story. Current drive is reported by Sys Info to be APPLE HDD HUA722010CLA330 Media. While I was at it I wanted to upgrade to a Fusion drive but the Genius guy said they couldn't do it; something about warranty which seems absurd because this machine is long out of warranty but that's what he said. This very afternoon I had reason to fire up my old 17" Core Duo running 10.6.8 and was amazed at how fast it booted. Granted, I don't have it loading a dozen iStat Menus and other widgets, but still... -- John Varela

Right now I have open Activity Monitor, Parallels Desktop running OS/2, Firefox open to a Facebook page with no animations, and Mail.app. BusyCal, NeoOffice, 1Password, and iTunes are minimized to the Dock. Parallels is using 100% of a CPU. Window Server is using about 3% of a CPU. When I click on a Facebook video, Window Server usage jumps to 72% and the video does not run smoothly. With Mavericks there would have been no problem running a video and Parallels at the same time. -- John Varela

You will probably need to do clean Yosemite install on that system. You can try debugging the issue, but that will probably take much longer.

You've got a dilemma. You want the latest apps, but you don't want the OS that can run them. Windows XP is cheap on ebay, and the price of Win 7 is coming down. Linux is free or very cheap. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm

Win XP/7 live in Virtual Box on this iMac and on a Linux laptop. Why should apps be so tied to the OS? Wasn't that what got MS in so much trouble? As in IE? Couldn't apps be separate?
