#34883 — Safe to remove Xcode?

OK, got pan up and running. So can I just delete the Xcode package and
still have pan working?

If so, is it just a drag 'n drop in the trash deletion?

Reason I ask is that this latest round of updates also included Xcode
update. And that is taking forever. I don't need Xcode because I have
no need to make another app. To give you an idea of how long it is
taking to update, it has been saying '4 minutes left' for the last 30
minutes but the indicator has moved a miniscule amount so I know it is
still working.

Yes, but (see below)

I just removed (20 minutes ago) XCode (using AppCleaner) rather than do
the XCode update that comes with 10.11.4. I did download the command
line tools.

Updated the system (App Store) and re-started. 10.11.4 seems fine and
my compilers still work ...

I'm at "less than a minute" now. Given past records of the fiction of
those timers, I figure it will be at least 10 more minutes... :)

AHA!! It finally is finished.

I'll be doing the same after I send this.

I got rid of Xcode except for the command line tools. But oddly the
update to them just won't install on my machine. Tried a few reboots,
app store install, starts to install and then quits to showing update
again.

For now I'm not concerned because I doubt I'll ever use them again.

My pan is working fine which was all that I actually wanted.

You may need to install and authorize CL tools from an admin account,
though I had no such issues. Note that I removed XCode before updating
to 10.11.4; and I updated the CL tools at the same time as the OS update.

I got what I needed, pan, and have no other needs from the open source
world so I doubt the issue will ever come up again.

And if I feel the urge to play Linux I can just crank up the Chromebook
Pixel and run it there. :)

it's best to install xcode via the developer site rather than the app
store so you don't have 5 gig updates all the time.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind if I ever decide I need it again. I
don't think I will, but you just never know.

Mine's about 25% done and predicts an hour to go. But since I'll be
doing other things for longer than that, I tolerate it.

And now (three-plus hours later), I'm ready to shut down, but it says
it's about half done and has four hours to go. :-)

I had no issues at all. Removing X-code from this iMac took seconds,
took a minute or 2 on my MBA at work.

Installing 10.11.4 and rebooting into that took about 8 minutes on the
iMac and about 15 on the MBA at work. Not sure for the other MBA here
at home - did it via Screen Share and didn't really pay attention. But
certainly no more than 15 minutes or so.
