Latenitesoft made a Mac application called Clusters that used an OS X
file system compression mechanism built into OS X 10.6 or later to
automatically compress specified folders, the contents of which are
decompressed on the fly when they are accessed. I used it up to Yosemite
without issue. I'm not sure if it's compatible with El Capitan though.
It was last updated in 2013.
