That sounds as if it might be one of several possibilities. Whatever 
the problem you are going to need a visit to an Apple store or a 
certified repair center. Since you are still running OSX 10.6.8, it 
looks as if time and wear and tear have caught up with you:

1:	The ribbon connector to the display, which runs through the hinge 
might be damaged and needs to be replaced. I had this happen to a G4 
PowerBook Pro 17", and the entire display had to be replaced because of 
the way the connection was made with that particular PB.

2:	The ribbon connector is fine, but there is an LCD failure. This is unlikely.

3:	Possible logic board failure.
