That's ok at the beginning when no-one knows how to use a word processor 
and companies expect to have to spend their own money training 
employees. When some applicants have the skills already and others would 
have to be trained before they could start working then they aren't 
going to employ untrained people! It's not just a computer thing. Night 
schools used to do courses in typing and shorthand etc to get you 
qualified for admin jobs.

Someone had to put computers in schools it just happened to be the BBC. 
The BBC has always been involved in education (after all it is one of 
the reasons they exist).
