Er, you do realise the BBC didn't actually design and build the BBC Micro, don't you? It was made by Acorn and just badged/endorsed by the BBC. So it wasn't an evolutionary dead end either - it's successor the Acron Archimedes was backwards-compatible with the BBC Micro to some extent, and a very nice piece of kit to boot.
